A Destructive Pattern

A Destructive Pattern.
Can I just mention here that I am crippled after carrying these three around North Tipperary for the last week. But I am really satisfied with some of the photographs that came from this project. That said, the panels could do with some cleaning up after being carried through two bogs, over a river, across fields, down roads and not to mention they nearly crushed my dog at one point. And now to the serious bit...

I began this project focusing all my attention on newspaper and media texts from 1973, that I managed to salvage from an old loft. Originally, I had planned to work extensively with these texts, and re-work them. These new texts I would use to develop a new newspaper or one page spread. I spent so long reading these articles, to the point that I can quote them at this point. I think that I settled on the idea of a newspaper publication too quickly, actually it was one of the first things that I thought about when I first discovered the papers. I have however re-worked many of these newspaper texts, and they are featured in the next post relating to the project.

Once I came home for Easter break, with two weeks to really deal with the project, I just kept drawing and copying these shapes. Preserving them. These shapes that were created by the papers slowly disintegrating over times. Their stories fading away, leaving these symbols and windows where ever the papers were folded. These symbols became what I associated these papers with. As a matter of fact, I was able to tell what story was in each paper at a glance based on what design I could see. These silhouette like designs were caused by those papers I love falling apart.

I continued on with the destructive patterns.

The sun really helped from about 12pm onwards for the day. It brought up the white panel better.

A short girl carrying large sheets of plywood is not normally seen walking down the road. A good few cars slowed down when I was setting up just to see what was going on.
