This post is going to look at different publication artists that have interested me lately, And they are brilliant so pay attention!
Collectionnomanist by Comalada Jérémy on Newspaper Club
While we were in Kilmore Quay for the publication field trip, we were encouraged to collect images, words, items or anything that together could make an interesting body of work. I was interested in this publication because it focuses on the idea of collection. It divides the collection into different categories such as colour, cables, Ganesh plants and markers. We were told not to make a catalogue, but I am still interested in this publication in terms of thinking about how to divide out the images we would have taken on the trip.

DAILY DEDAL #01 by Benoist BUTTIN on Newspaper Club
This is heavily text based. The artist is also and an Architect, Artist, and a Photographer.
I liked many aspects of this publication. The layout of each page spread, the monochromatic colour scheme and how he uses image throughout the paper. The use of photographs that seem similar to our own experiments of using photograms in first year. This was something Remco mentioned in Kilmore Quay, the idea of bringing items back to the studio to make photograms with.
Daily Maily by stephange on Newspaper Club

Steph Winton is a graduate illustrator who studied at Bath School of Art.
This newspaper is based on the ridiculous stories from the daily mail online. Each spread shows a different article with extracts from the title and story. printed by the newspaper club
I loved the humour in this. We were talking in Kilmore about not over conceptualizing an idea or theme. To take the material we have gathered and work with an idea or concept because we like it for what it is. We can have some fun with the project, it doesn't always have to be steeped in meaning.
These images are by Jonathon Monk.
"A number of points randomly collected"
"For this second part, Jonathan Monk will work outside the gallery space. A number of
points randomly connected will invade the streets of Paris, in order to question the work
of art status, its present form and its relationship to the public and gallery space. One
more time, Jonathan Monk will challenge the traditional scheme of an exhibition and will
take us along an ephemeral and unique artistic experience."Source

This is a link that I think caroline in particular might like. It seems to focus on road and street markings and I know she did some work with this in Kilmore. You can download a pdf if you follow the links.
It can be found on Onestarpress.com from the Rag media collection.

Raimond Chaves & Gilda Mantilla
Dibujando América, 2009
Ed. Trienal Poli/Gráfica de San Juan, América Latina y el Caribe
Ed. 300. 276 pp. 17,5 x 23 cm
Price: 75 €
"Artist's book composed of 9 illustrated booklets in a cardboard box. The publication compiles many of the drawings, part of the work Dibujando América (Drawing America) which Chaves and Mantilla developed between 2005 and 2009. The project is a reflection of a territory through images and the multiple processes and tensions that conform it, with the knowledge and pleasure associated to travelling and the practice of drawing."
This was interesting to examine when thinking of ways of making a publication. Rather than one book, or one newspaper, you could make multiple and package them together. I'm very interested in the typography and style of the font cover also, it's something that after talking to Orla last week and looking at other publications, has reminded me not to overlook this aspect of the publication.
http://www.projectesd.com/index.php/books/ features the work of Raimond Chaves and many other publication artists.
Enviado Especial 17/02 – 05/03 Cartagena, 2007
Ed. 3000. 38 pp. 30 x 43,5 cm
"Newspaper with drawings produced for the exhibition Cart[ajena]. R. Chaves becomes a reporter accompanying the journalists of Cartagena's newspaper "La Verdad" in their daily search for news, even attending their editorial meetings. Starting out from the same documentary input, Chaves makes his own newspaper where the news is transmuted by his own subjectivity, social conscience and political bias."

The Swarm by Amy on Newspaper Club
"I created this newspaper as a way of displaying the illustrations I produced in response to Arthur Herzog's 1978 book 'The Swarm'. The series of illustrations are a combination of hand-rendered and digital collaging. Using a mixture of my own photography, images from magazines, newspapers and stock images online."
Michael Morrell - reportage newspaper by Michael Morrell on Newspaper Club
"A newspaper based on the reportage created whilst documenting the destruction of the BBC in Manchester."
I absolutely love this. Everything from the concept, humour and the quality of the drawings. There is minimal text involved, but what is used is relevant to either explaining the drawings or just to be humorous. I think It's a valuable reference in terms of layout and colour. Colour is something that seems to have been carefully selected on every page. Finally, It is not a very long publication, quality over quantity. Just as a reminder to myself (and anyone else who cares to read this) that quality of content is the most important. We don't have to produce a novel length publication, especially if you don't really have the material to suit it.
